Abstract
There is growing pressure for economic efficient and effective educational institutions that do not contribute to damaging climate change. The focus has turned to the design of buildings and systems that must be Integrated, Intelligent and Sustainable.

This seminar is intended for those who commission, own, use, design, build and operate educational buildings and for those who aspire to make educational buildings more sustainable and intelligent in future.

The seminar will bring together pedagogic as well as operational practice to advance the quality of learning environments as well as improving the learning experience.

An eclectic mix of leading figures from schools, local authorities, further and higher education will reveal the strategic reasons for sustainable intelligent (aka bright green) buildings and the operational cost benefits that can result.

Leading exponents of the practical implementation of ‘bright green’ buildings will showcase some of the latest technologies and processes being used right now by educational business leaders to integrate systems and create sustainable intelligent buildings both in new builds and refurbishments.

SCALA/SCEME/CLAW Study Day - “Are we ready for the challenge of a new decade” – 11 June 2010

Following last year’s very successful Study Day at the Welsh School of Architecture, SCALA, SCEME and CLAW have once again come together to explore how delegates can meet the challenge of building a sustainable environment with the added challenges arising from the election, an ever increasing amount of local/national/international regulations and an ever dwindling pot of money. There will be a focused and rewarding series of presentations from leading speakers giving practical guidance and examples in this field. This is followed in the afternoon by breakout sessions allowing smaller groups of delegates to explore specific areas of interest with high levels of interaction. The venue for the Study Day is the newly completed, Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE), within the grounds of the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), near Machynlleth, one of the world’s foremost eco-centres, with over 30 years of research and experience in sustainable living.

A Carbon Management Strategy for Schools

This consultation paper mapped out key issues related to establishing a system and set of policies for a low carbon schools sector. It was accompanied by Towards a Schools Carbon Management Plan - Evidence and assumptions informing consultation on a schools carbon management plan.

CIBSE's key message, given that schools account for around 2% of UK greenhouse gas emissions, was that the schools sector should aim for ‘leadership' status. As part of the public sector it is essentially committed to do so by government policy, and could stimulate market transformation through renewable technology in its procurement processes and leadership in measurement and management of energy.

Delivering effective school environments that meet low or zero carbon targets will be a major challenge and the consultation proposes a number of good measures but we need to go much further if we are to achieve zero carbon targets without comprising on indoor air quality, acoustics or daylighting in our schools, all of which affect learning. CIBSE also said that a whole building approach needs to be adopted to deliver effective school environments.

CIBSE drew upon a body of survey information relevant to many of the issues covered by the consultation developed by a UCL research group in collaboration with the CIBSE School Design group.

NEW EVENT: Passive & Hybrid Downdraught Cooling Symposium

Organisers: Nottingham University, UCL, CIBSE School Design Group, CIBSE Natural Ventilation Group and IBPSA-England

CIBSE School Design Group and CIBSE Natural Ventilation Group have contributed to the organisation of this international symposium which will introduce different approaches to downdraught cooling and illustrate this by reference to case study buildings around the world. The market for Passive & Hybrid Downdraught Cooling in Europe, India and China, and life-cycle costs will also be addressed. Climatic applicability and design strategies and rules of thumb will be discussed prior to the introduction to the software tools in the workshop. A special session will review the design and performance of the UCL School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies to which a visit is planned for the Friday afternoon.

All delegates will get a copy of ‘Design Sourcebook’ which provides a ‘state of the art’ summary, and guidance for architects and engineers. The sourcebook also includes two software tools which will enable architects and engineers to predict energy and environmental performance and to assess the affects of design changes on performance. The draft Sourcebook and software will be available free of charge to all delegates to the symposium.

By attending the International Symposium one will be able to gain significant insight into recent developments and applications of PHDC around the world.

International Safer Schools, Safer Communities (ISSSC) conference

Ensuring safe and secure environments for children, young people and the community

Organised by OECD/CELE, Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Home Office, United Kingdom and BRE

One of the principal pre-requisites of a quality education is a safe and secure environment for staff, students and communities. As part of the Every Child Matters Agenda and the 2007 Children's Plan, the United Kingdom is adopting a multi-agency approach to child development and youth action aimed at eliminating the social causes of crime and poor behaviour within and outside school, such as bullying, vandalism, theft, arson, and violent crime. The intention is for all schools to become extended schools that are fully engaged with their communities and serve as hubs for children's services in their area

This three-day conference, being held in London from 13-15 January, will examine how teachers, governors, parents and students - together with national and local government, community groups and local agencies, police and law enforcement officers, designers, contractors, educationalists, and public health and safety officials - can address the issues of safety and security.

Three approaches will be explored:

Crime prevention through environmental design and management of the physical environment
Programmes of social intervention including behaviour management and pastoral care
Actions of the police and the justice system

Output

The principal conference output is a report, including international guidelines outlining:

Principles of safe and secure schools
Principles of effective intervention strategies for children and young people

Working language

The working language for the conference is English
